Yup, that is me with ZTrip in Indianapolis this past weekend…and that is my buddy Dave from Red Bull photobombing my picture with ZTrip. Thanks. So as the title indicates, I was in Indianapolis this past weekend for the Red Bull Indianapolis Grand Prix. Since the race (and thus, Red Bull) took over downtown Indy for the weekend, there were plenty of parties to be had. ZTrip and I played a Red Bull event that was in a parking lot right on the main drag. Playing house music for bikers is…interesting. Don’t get me wrong, it was a good time and we bar-hopped afterwards, watching as each place we went to got progressively more cheesy. We started in a semi-decent club and ended up in a joint that was like a fraternity held a party in Johnny Rockets (see above pic). Oh what a night…
“Might Like You Better” by Amanda Blank has been starting to get the treatment from various artists and this latest from NROTB is my favorite thus far. The vocal affectations that pitch Blank’s voice all over the map works in the remix’s favor, playing off a drum-heavy production topped with panned loopy synths. Overall there’s a dark tone that is a virtual slap to those not dancing. Get the f**k up!

I’m a huge fan of Calvin Harris’ “I’m Not Alone” and a lot of the remixes I’ve heard thus far sound forced and overworked. Not this take by Thomas R. Instead, Thomas borrows the recognizable melody and pairs it with a secondary and tertiary wandering synths that follow in the background while also offering additional melodic backbone. It’s a smart decision considering Thomas nixes the vocals in his rendering. The percussion and drums are also more Thomas R than Calvin Harris but work wonderfully.

“God Is A Slacker” by Dem Slackers is a fantastic tune and a remix of it appears on my newest mix, “Wonderlust.” The tune has been around for a minute so it was a bit of a surprise to get a new remix of it (not a bad thing though). Techjio does a fantastic job, keeping the wobbly feel of the tune but switching it up a touch to make his own dirty version. Thank goodness too because the other version I like has the most dj-unfriendly outro ever…looks like this might be my replacement remix!

Yay, another remix from buddy Grandtheft of Team Canada! This remix of his has actually been around for a while but people still rock it and he’s never officially sent it to the blogs…so here we are. With a crazy booming snare and ebbing synths, his remix of Red Hot Chili Peppers’ “By The Way” has a peak hour sound without going to 11. If you’re looking for an intensity level, think the Chew Fu remix of Kings of Leon – that’s probably comparable. All around a fun remix that manages to restrain itself in a way that just works.

Yes, yes, yes another Daft Punk remix. This one isn’t so much of a remix though as it is a hijacking of an acapella. You’ll understand what I mean when you listen – Death To The Throne rocks the trickling synths interspersed with more minimal and traditional electro-house sections that make this a memorable remix. Will definitely be sneaking this one in. Bonus on providing the instrumental as well – will be great with a whole host of acapellas.

It took me almost a week to think of what the Death to the Throne remix sounds like, then it hit me: Star Guitar. Sounds like a Star Guitar remix w/ the Technologic acapella over it.
