It’s been an exhausting day. Finished writing up my interview with Perry Farrell, wrote three album reviews for Fabric Dukes, Herve and Fedde Le Grande, respectively, and managed to be a little homemaker, watering the lawn, doing laundry, etc. The highlight of my day (besides writing this for all of you!) will be when the boyfriend comes home, bearing BBQ chicken and we watch Hellboy 2. Ahhhh…now that’s an evening. So before that happens I thought I’d get all the writing out of my system and bang out a post before letting my brain completely melt for the night.
Everyone needs a little juke in their lives. Of course, “Juke Dem hoes” by Stereoheroes with Mic Terror reminds me of Classic Chicago tunes at its core. We got the corner on booty lyrics (thanks DJ Funk and crew) so immediately my head started bobbing when I listened to this. It’s like an updated version of booty house with rolling synths and Mic Terror dropping everything including “do the west side perculator, south side perculator.” WHUT!

The always reliable Disco Villains are back with yet another remix, this time of Rick Ross’ “Hustlin.” I have to say I think I still prefer the version by Paul Anthony & ZXX but this is a nice alternative that’s a bit grittier for the crowd that prefers their audio a little less polished. They stick to looping and chopping the signature line, adding some pan that works quite nicely. The crown jewel of the tune is the breakbeat that comes in around 2:15, keeping the interest and throwing a bone to people who might want something a little extra.

Minimal pseudo-tribal influence is at work in “Alone In The Jungle” by DirtyBeats, rendering this tune a perfect drop alongside Pon Di Floor or like-minded productions. Though, in my mind, almost too minimal in nature, this is a track ripe for looping, live chopping or a little acapella action. It reads as a near-blank canvas and, heck, those kinds of songs are nice for a little late night action once you’ve got everyone drunk and they’re TOTALLY into it.

Jacuzzi Hi-Dive’s version of B. Rich’s “Make Me Dance” is so utterly surprising and pleasant. It’s the perfect light touch the track needed for an alternate remix. It sounds like it could have legitimately been like this to begin with and anything harder would have been a remix. Tambourine and sultry melodies with pads backing it all up prove the perfect counterpoint to the vocals which ebb in and out with perfection. Well done.

Following in that vein, let’s keep taking it down with the Tuff Wheelz remix of Robot Disaster’s “Paint The Town.” Punchy kicks and claps stand in the forefront while a simplistic ascending melody carries the vocal throughout. This is one of those instances where in construction, the song is quite simple, but it’s also done well. Maybe I would have brought those claps down a notch, but hey, it’s personal preference. Overall I’m a fan of the hypnotic quality that comes across.

And finally, to wind down the post, the lovely remix of “Mitch” by Fukkk Offf. Chock full of percussion with a live-sounding lilting melody line on top, this is certainly an unexpected delivery from the producer, but a welcome one. A bit of a sidestep from what’s normally offered on D Squared, but it was too lovely to pass up. Perfect to end a night or for a lounge-y set.
