Oh boy last night was a doozy. Between watching my intern (part of group Punky Fresh) WIN the Dell Lounge Lollapalooza contest at Doubledoor, getting Tittsworth spanked by a Burlesque dancer and then eating crappy Mexican food at 2am, the night was, as my friend Vanessa would say, ‘great success.’
But enough about last night because…OMG it’s Lollapalooza weekend, and I’m playing the URB boat party and I just finished my new mix and it’s my birthday next weekend – ahhhh! So much awesome stuff is going on, I can’t believe it. Cannot wait to see Depeche Mode, Simian Mobile Disco, Miike Snow, Lykke Li, Animal Collective, Diplo, Friendly Fires, Silversun Pickups and I think about a kajillion other groups. One bummer – I won’t be able to see Vampire Weekend, but at least it’s for a good reason. I’ll be playing the URB boat party on Sunday with Tommie Sunshine – w00t! NOT looking forward to the 90+ weather that’s predicted for the weekend…but we Chicagoans always seem to get screwed weather-wise when Lolla rolls around. I think I remember it being unbearably hot last summer as well. Anyone else going? Who are you excited to see?
I also just finished my new mix, Wonderlust, and I’m so excited to share it with all of you. It’s got tracks from the likes of Kissy Sell Out, Yuksek and Discotech and I’ve listened to it about a dozen times in a row and am very happy with the finished product. Full tracklist and mix are below. Lastly, I’m playing in Texas for my birthday weekend (August 15th)! If you are in the area, I’m playing with Hot Pink Delorean in Austin on August 14th and at Fallout Lounge in Dallas on August 15th. You can email me at dani@danideahl.com for any guest list requests.
The mix! This newest mix is called “Wonderlust” and as I mentioned above, I think is pretty slamming. I’m including the tracklist and a stream below. To download it, visit my podcast xml link or go to my podcast directly on iTunes.

I’ve been super into minimal tracks as of late so when I heard this Techjio remix of B. Rich’s “Make Me Dance,” I was happy, to say the least. With minimal drums, pronounced hand claps and a solitary synth that warbles for the majority of the track, this is something I can see dropping at the peak of a set after some nasty, super grimy tune. Watch everyone freak out and grab a girl.

Another drum-centric tune, but in a completely different direction. Iamxl, who normally delivers tracks with punch has sent over this dreamy and laidback mix of Ben Harper’s “Burn One Down.” Not normally my playing style, but I can make an exception. An over the top happy vibe comes across here with heavily laden percussion and picked guitar. It’s really not incredibly far off from the original – just makes it a bit more friendly for DJs and beefs it up on the perc with a touch higher bpm. Also included, the iamxl mix of Riton & Primary 1’s “Who’s There.” Middle of the road tempo that could be a great transition track.

Haven’t heard a remix of “We Are Rockstars” in a hot minute. Cold Blank revives the Does It Offend You, Yeah tune by making it even harder. I know. I enjoy that he keeps in the loops that everyone recognizes and adds his own touch by juxtaposing it against his own interpretations. Definitely have to consider when to drop this one in.

Looks like Dragonette is on everyone’s radars again. We just had the Robbed By Robots take on a Dragonette song and now it’s Villains taking on “Fixin to Thrill.” Typical in your face synths are in here but I think the star of the track is the breakdown, which, at a full minute might seem long, is actually pretty danceable with vocals, an underlying synth and claps. It builds up nicely and jumps right into the meat of the remix.

Oh I love Lee Mortimer. There’s actually a Lee Mortimer track on my mix (see above). This is a totally fun remix of Sam Young’s “Peep This.” Mortimer refreshingly uses a synth with no extended release, decay, sidechaining, etc. It’s bumpity and staccato with Aphletik’s rap running over it.

Yes, everyone has been flipping out over Duck Sauce (though if I showed you guys my old record collection it’s like that x 1000). I’ve always also been a big fan of Canada’s DLG (he’s made plenty of appearances here on dsquared before) so it seemed natural to post this remix he did of “aNYway.” This remix totally reminds me of all the older big room disco tracks I used to jock by guys like Dave Armstrong, Falcon, Olav, Cabin Crew and the rest. Sidechain goodness works here, beefing it up to early 2000 anthem quality (I swear, I mean that in a very good way). BONUS: DJ DLG more minimal remix of HCCR’s “KIng Of Drop.”

Top 40 whut whut! Nick Sandoval brings a more minimal cut of The Black Eyed Peas’ “I Got A Feeling” that’s kinda sorta like the David Guetta re-cut but less intense. The signature guitars only pop in here on the breaks as the supplemental elements slowly build and the vocal stutters out. Overall the track is slightly more mainroom (think like, Crobar on a Saturday night, they would eat this up) but it’s done nicely though I do wish there was a second mini break towards the end to pop the vocal in one more time.

Well hello, Tactic. This remix of Phosho’s “Control” is drummy deliciousness. I don’t think it holds enough interest for me to play the entire thing out (even though it is only just shy of five minutes) but I would use this as a nice little party break for a minute, minute and thirty seconds. Heck, the outro really begins at three minutes anyway so I guess it’s not much of a stretch. Overall though I enjoy the muted claps and the layers of hand drums. This would be fun to have this as an instrumental – tons of acapellas I would want to play around with.

OOOOk, here’s another one that toes the line – it might qualify as a slight guilty pleasure but I don’t give a crap, it’s still gorgeous. Deal. This HouseClap remix of Marit Bergman’s “Casey” is really well done. You would never guess what the original sounded like. House Clap manages to give the vocal a much dreamier tone than is conveyed in the original and pairs it with a simple looped synth that ducks for the vocal, leaving a simple and clean track that sounds like it could stand as an original in its own right (I mean, it practically is, save the vocal, but the vocal matches perfectly).

I was first introduced to the Black Lips the first time I went to Atlanta and Jordan from the band Snowden took me music shopping. I’ve loved them ever since and was happily surprised to see a Black Lips remix pop up in my email, courtesy of Afghan Raiders. Here’s the twist – it’s “The Drop I Hold” which is actually the Black Lips and GZA…whaaaaa? Effing rad. At a delightfully slightly slower tempo and bright, straightforward percussion complimented by melodic lines that aren’t overly intense, this is a great mix that doesn’t overdo it.

I love Barletta and actually, this isn’t my favorite track that he’s done but it’s still very good. This remix of Metric’s “Help I’m Alive” has amazing parts and then parts that sound incredibly empty and incessantly loopy. The main synth work I don’t think would sound so lackluster to me if it weren’t for the more amazing parts that kick in around 1:20 – where supplemental instruments make it start to pop and come alive. Aw heck, I still like it overall.

UP IN THE AIR:
Ok, I cannot tell if I like this track or not. I think I like the underlying instrumentals but the vocals kill me. It’s a remake of Survivor’s “Eye Of The Tiger.” Granted, I’ve heard some remixes before that pay delicious, cheesy homage and if you took the vocals away, you would have that here. The vocals though, a girl and a guy singing together, sound to be ever so slightly flat and there’s a persistent sense that they are trying to make their voices sound powerful, but it’s just not happening. It’s Survivor, unless you can hit those power notes it’s like the electro version of birthday karaoke. If I could get this as an instrumental with the affected vocal that pops in towards the end, I’d be a happy camper.
