Take It Down A Notch Posted by admin

I know I always put up bangers so this time I have a little collection of things that are taken down a notch. This does NOT mean ambient, downtempo, Hotel Costes… but just normal dsquared with a peg less RAAAAWR. I know some of you will appreciate the disco-infused, organic-laden melodic tunes below. By the way, don’t get too used to this – we’re back up to 11 next time.

I just got the new Loose Shus EP and while I liked the EP on a whole – this Xinobi remix of “Threesome” caught my attention. Buttery smooth with sidechaining adding a slight bounce, the remix slowly chugs along, topped with mingling snyths that cross continually cross paths – one ducks out, the other one comes forth, etc. Simply beautiful to listen to.

I haven’t heard a remix of Dragonette’s “I Get Around” in a hot minute, especially now that the new track with Martin Solveig is out, but hey, a great track is a great track. While I wish Robbed By Robots hadn’t affected the vocals (there’s no need to IMO), the arpeggiated mainline that makes up the bulk of the track carries the tune nicely, transitioning to a higher frequency on the break that eventually counteracts the original, lower synth. Simple, but executed well.

Generally, I don’t think a track that opens with an acapella talking about titties is going to go anywhere lilting and melodic, but hey, I’ve been wrong before. This DJ Tuco x Sasha Grey takes a full on disco house track and combines it with vox from Sasha Grey to give us what Tuco calls “a “French Kiss” for the Y0up0rn generation.” yep, I think that about sums it up. Can anyone ID the underlying song for me? I’m loving it.

Lots of instrumental-based tracks in this post… Next up is Burns with “Heartbeats,” a song that relies on electric guitar-esque notes that are mimicked by the bassline to give a sense of beefiness. Adding to everything are beautifully panned hi hats. Normally panning in my experience is hard to do well and gives me a headache when I’m listening in speakers, but the way Burns executes it here completely enhances the song. Overall it’s got a slight retro reference – kind of reminds me of some of those older epic tracks like “High Again.”

Speaking of retro references, this DirtyBeats remix of Boney M’s “Daddy Cool” is straight up disco house. Man I love this direction – seems like more and more are going back to this style (and capitalizing on it – Duck Sauce anyone?) This is the kind of stuff I grew up on so I love listening to it. Granted, the second half of the track is straight up dirty, wobbly and evil, but the first half sticks right to the happy-go-lucky. The transition between the two halves is quite seamless – this would be a great track to transition between sounds with.

“Easier” is part of the “Bang For Changes” EP from group Zambri out of New York. The singers are sisters and complimented by bandmates Andy, Carrie and Chris. They’ve been compared to everyone from The Yeah Yeah Yeahs to Bjork and the EP in general is pretty badass so if you have a moment check it out. Nick Seeley remixes “Easier” to great effect, creating a mix that sounds like it could stand on its own as an original itself. Not entirely a 4/4 track, there’s a lot of care taken to follow the girls’ voices throughout. Fun and poppy with electro elements.

Kap10Kurt’s been getting some love on the blog lately, and with good reason. Take this latest remix of Clubfeet’s “Teenage Suicide.” With trailing synths that have epic atmospherics and supporting notes that wash over dramatically during the slow moments, this is simply one feel-good song. The vocals get a touch washed out during the hot parts when everything is in play, but pop beautifully during other moments.

That winds up being a nice segway for this Clubfeet remix of The Glass’ newest single, “Wanna Be Dancin’.” It has some similar elements from the previous track (in feel, anyway) and I love some of the minimal parts that drop everything save for some pads and drums. Some interesting sounds like glassy stabs sound almost vintage and as the track progresses it segways from heavy vocals to building instrumentals.

This Shark Attack tune is growing on me. Simple in nature, it hits a lot of the right elements to make it a very successful track. I wish it was sped up just a couple bpm, but that’s just a personal preference. Everything in the song is nice and crisp, with the vocals almost to a fault (it sounds like he’s a bit hoarse in a couple sections), but overall nothing here is overdone, just done well.

Like that Xinobi remix. The synth work reminds me of some updated, electro-fied Tangerine Dreams or Kitaro ish (for those old school heads).

Totally chilled but upbeat at the same time.
