Today will be semi-brief…its been an insane week! I will say this, we have a new release on Calamity Jane coming out June 1st, so mark your calendars! I’ll be giving you guys a bit more info about it in the coming weeks leading up to it. I’m so excited, we have some amazing music coming your way :-)
But on to the amazing music for TODAY… I know how much you all love Barletta and yes, I have a new one. “Fire + Gold” shows a more sophisticated side of this producer, with more traditional and, dare I say, mainstream touches like the nice feel-good major key the song is programmed in and big whooshy buildups. Have no fear, the snare and clap are still a little rough around the edges and the synth line goes a little awry towards the end, keeping it away from being too saccharine. Lovely tune.

DJ Vanish of Velcro City Records just did this bootleg of Pony Pony Run Run’s “Hey You.” Without overdoing it, he managed to make the track a nice crossover that now works on any dancefloor. With a bump up from 112 to 128, new added percussion and kick and a subtle electro-tinged bassline, the song retains its original feel but feels wholly refreshed. I’ve already listened to this thing about five times and it keeps getting better.

Achilles and Guile have just finished this commissioned remix and got the a-ok from the artist to post – yippee! Their remix of Monty’s “I Remember” is completely solid. They work the hell out of the hook and snippets of vocal, interjected with rap on top. I know, the whole rap meets electro thing is everywhere now, right? I don’t care, it’s freaking hot and these two balance that tightrope effortlessly.

Ok, here’s a remix of a remix…Colorado’s D.F3CT was quite fond of the Justin Sane & Kyle Bourke remix of 3OH!3’s “Don’t Trust Me” but after listening to it several times, was irked by several aspects of the production including a super quiet chorus and a breakdown that he felt didn’t pay proper homage to the original. So he tackled the remix, flowing back and forth from the original to the remix and adding his own touches on top. It really works quite well. Oh, it also gets the award for lyrics that are debatably offensive: “Shush girl, shut your lips. Do the Helen Keller and talk with your hips.”

Going down to South America, we have Brazilian trio Pristine Blusters who sent over a slew of material. I loved the email they sent which plainly said “I am a Brazilian DJ from Rio de Janeiro and I produce some very good stuff,” to which my immediate reaction is ‘Ok hotshot, let’s see what you’ve got.’ Well, he spoke the truth. All three below are quite different in their own ways and interject bits of funk, electro, breakbeat and most importantly, fun. You get the sense that they are very conscious that they are creating pure party tracks. My first reaction when I listen is that I want to hear them on massive speakers…now.

Lastly, another Mansion tune! It’s been a fair amount of time since I’ve posted anything from this duo and was glad to see this. Frankly, I don’t think it’s their best production but it’s definitely solid. To me, it sounds more like a tune with an acapella thrown on top rather than a remix that integrates the vocal. I do enjoy the actual vocal though and appreciate that it’s the focus of the remix. Nothing more annoying than a producer that uses a snippet of a line of a song and says, ‘Ta da! Remix!’
