Last night I went out to Chicago’s infamous Boom Boom Room with my friend Julio Bishop and Jonathan from Clek Clek Boom. Jonathan was visiting from France and we figured if he had one night to see a Chicago party, it had to be Boom Boom Room. For those of you not familiar with the night, it’s a Chicago house night at Green Dolphin Street that has been running for an unbelievable 17 years. Hundreds of people turn out every week without fail to the 5,000 square foot venue and pack it in. Last night Ralphi Rosario was headlining and as we promised Jonathan, it was packed. The one thing that makes Boom Boom different from many house nights is the feeling of community, a sense that everyone is there for the music, and not to buy bottle service. Simply put, without sounding cheesy, there is a vibe, which Jonathan obviously felt as he kept exclaiming “I feel like I’m 18 again!” It was a fantastic night of sweaty dancing topped off with Chicago style hot dogs outside the club at 4 in the morning. It put me in such a good mood I figured I had to put up a post and share some music with you all today :-)
So here comes what will seem like the unofficial FnDannyBoy tribute. The man sent me six songs in one go and I had to put them all up. It’s a wide variety, from house to hip hop remixes. A couple are more mellow than what I’m used to hearing from him (such as the Jaime Foxx and T-Pain remix) but overall it’s a great variety of sounds. You know the deal, great, straightforward mixes with an electro slant – can’t go wrong there.

Next, Fagget Fairys have their debut EP coming out and one cut from it is really, to quote the track, yum yum. The club dub mix of “Feed The Horse” is a bit slow when zeroed out, but has a nice dark electro low end that accompanies the vocals that manage to sound sexy while saying “feed the horse.” Bless them.

DJ Beebs has remixed Lady Sovereign’s “So Human” with a heavy hand on relentless synths and loopy vox. Overall I like the feel of the tune, but the parts where her vocal is allowed to go beyond clipped samples get utterly lost, swallowed up by the intensity of the rest of the production. I can still envision this being a banger though…but man it would also be fun to have an instrumental of this.

DJ Wool has a new remix pack out for Izza Kizza’s “Hello” and the production sounds very thoughtful to me, maybe pared down a little bit, a sense of restraint. I almost wish there was a part where the track really lets go and has a few bars with some wilder variation in the synth lines. Aside from that, the way DJ Wool arranges everything is very conscious of the vocal and lets it shine throughout, triggering changes that correspond with the verses. Bonus, he provides what he calls a dub, but is really an instrumental – a capella time anyone?

Sweden’s Style of Eye has delivered a slamming tech-influenced remix of Kenneth Bager’s “Fragment One.” It’s so much fun, with breaks delivering snippets of everything from horns to vocals that almost sound like spoken word. The meat of the track is heavy on the high-end with lots of shuffle that has a nice bouncing quality to it. While I think I would personally have to find the right spot in one of my sets for it, I would totally jam to this if I heard it while out.

Sorry…I only keep the past six months of posts active with download links. It’s a lot of traffic for my site.
