Lately I’ve been chatting with one of my editors at URB about house vs. hip hop. I will say right now I’m not a fan of hip hop, never have been, probably never will. Don’t get me wrong, I don’t hate all hip hop, but the few items I dig are few and far between. On the flipside, my editor feels the same way about house, saying that to him, it all sounds the same. After a pause on my part, he came back with, “Oh, did I offend you, yeah?” Touche. So I bet him that I could compile a list of ten house tunes that would make him change his mind and he bet me he could create a similar list for hip hop to give to me. I’m curious to hear what tunes you all think should be on the list. I would be ashamed to give him a list compiled only of classics, although a few probably have to be included.

Jungle Brothers - Girl I’ll House You - you guys could just compromise on this one alone! =)
in fact, i’ll avoid posting any of the other hip-house songs (except maybe Queen Latifah ‘Come Into My House’) . . . a lot of those earn hatred from both camps. =)
Blue 6 - Sweeter Love - i don’t see how ANYONE could hate on this song. the vocals are heartbreaking, the groove is . . . well, groovy and sensual, i’ve seen Coogi-swathed and/or Hieroglyphics shirt-wearing (as i am now) hip hop heads swaying in place like thug palm trees to this one.
Black Science Orchestra - New Jersey Deep - again, this song just latches into you if you have a rhythmic bone in your body. the guitar riff thrills through you, the bassline gets your head movin’ coz your neck knows it’s phat (your hip hop editor should know what i’m talking about) . . .
Detroit Grand Pubahs - Sandwiches - this song is just too fun to hate on. “i know you wanna do itttt . . .”
if i think of more i’ll comment again tomorrow. and i’d be interested in seeing 1) what hip hop songs you DO like, and 2) what songs he suggests to you. as a fanatic of both sides this is an interesting debate!
