Is anyone else mired in TAXES? Uuuuugh nothing I hate more than looking at all the money I spent in the past year. On a tiny, brighter note, if anyone is into cooking they know the joys of this – I took all my knives in to be sharpened today. My boyfriend and I took a lime afterward and were stunned that we could make the tiniest slivers without any pressure at all. My god I can’t wait to use these babies. It’s the little things in life. Also…I have a new interview up with Cynamatik Productions where we chat about everything from the ‘girl DJ’ question to my drink of choice and the Kanye incident. READ IT HERE.
Top Flop has a remix of Double On The Rocks’ “Thats My Steez” and all you guys who visit dsquared for the harder gems will feel quite at home with this one. The hi hats are a touch over emphasized for my taste, but it’s a small quibble given all the great things in this remix from inventive patterning with the sounds to a nice ebb and flow with more laid back sections and those with greater intensity. My favorite part by far is around 4:15 where the synth breaks up slightly.

Normally I’m not one for 80s remixes (the line between amazing and cheese is so very fine), but there have been some instances where it works – like the Chew Fu and Steve Clisby cover of “Purple Rain” – so I like to give remixes a shot. Robbed By Robots has a remix of Madonna’s “Get Into The Groove” that fits into that same YES category with a baseline that de-emphasizes the inherent cheese and touches of piano and retro synth that harken back to the original without being too direct. Pulling back on the vocal was also a smart choice – well done.

Them Jeans is giving away “Flying Rats” from their upcoming “Beef EP” and although the track has already gotten thumbs up from Malente and Sinden, I’m still skeptical. There are elements I like, such as the incredibly crisp drums, but the central hook (a short vocal snippet?) has me at a loss once it begins to loop relentlessly and madly fluctuate in pitch. The cooing sound in the background also doesn’t help any for me. Somehow though, I have the feeling that this is just one of those tracks where you gotta play it at the peak of your set and watch everyone go bananas.

What’s there not to love here? Editors, Boys Noize, and a tight little edit. This edit by S-File pares down the original remix by a few minutes, getting into the meat of it much more quickly. It’s a bit noisier than the Boys Noize remix with percussion that isn’t as smoothly integrated, but I don’t mind here. I think it works and gives a nice, more raging alternative to the original remix.

I’ve been iffy on Sawgood‘s material. Some of it I enjoy and some of it I think is simply too noisy with not enough substance. His newest though, titled “Clowny” (off the “Sawsage EP”) reminds me of why I keep listening to his tracks. “Clowny” does indeed have carnival-like overtones in the melody of the upper-range synth, but it doesn’t come across as kitschy. Instead, the collection of vocal stabs, layered and perfectly panned percussion and a synth that will make you think ‘f**k yes’ all come together to make this, without hesitation, a two thumbs up endeavor.
