Wow…a weekend in town?? May was a blast – four gigs in Vegas, two in Denver, Boulder, Salt Lake City, Milwaukee, Madison, Detroit, and some crazy Chicago parties like Red Bull’s “Night of the Taurus”. Lots of new galleries are up on the site from most of the events – make sure you go check them out HERE. How do I even recap a month of events? You all know by now that there always seems to be an off kilter moment or two from the road and I had my share of those. I signed boobs in Madison, became an honorary resident for legendary night Lipgloss in Denver after hijinks like downing a bottle of champagne while kneeling on the stage, played “Night of the Taurus”, which featured live displays of Kinbaku (erotic Japanese bondage) and played Artisan afterhours in Vegas…where I heard someone screwing with my mixer, turned around, and it was Diplo.
I was reminded this month with all of the wonderful people who came out to support my shows, the amazing DJs I had the opportunity to play alongside and the experiences I’ve had…just how lucky I am. So in a rare sentimental moment…thanks.
Amtrac sent over a huge pack of remixes and a choice few are featured below. His take on every song is slightly romantic, playing with vocals to make them seemingly call out to the listener with big pads and minor keys adding heaps of texture. For example, the line pulled from the Beach Boys song for repeating is “let me go home” while in the M.I.A. take it’s “can I have a good time at yours tonight”. These clever vocal choices are the icing on the cake for these warm, golden-toned mixes.

Oh Snap!! has done something brilliant – combine epic, big room house tunes from the likes of Guetta and Robin S. with grimy dubstep. The result is the aptly named “Big Room Dubstep” bootleg project. There are eleven tunes in total – seven of which I liked enough to post here. In particular, the Axwell vs. Hostage boot steals my heart. Splicing Axwell’s vocals right before the drop makes the two parts blend seamlessly and provides a quick, unexpected surprise that’s guaranteed to amp everyone up instantly. Though I have a favorite, the rest are done just as well, with a signature Oh Snap!! cheekiness saddled right in.
Axwell & Hostage – I Found The Ba$$ (Oh Snap!! Bootleg)
David Guetta, Kelly Rowland & High Rankin – When Machete Takes Over (Oh Snap!! Bootleg)
LMFAO – Party Rock Anthem (Oh Snap!! Remix)
Oh Snap!! & Slumdogz – Everyone’s a DJ in the Hood (Oh Snap!! Bootleg)
Robin S., Will Bailey, Figure & AC Slater – Show Me Bass Powa (Oh Snap!! Bootleg)
Dylan Sanders has added his touch to a couple songs – the Lazy Rich Mix of “Raw 2 Da Floor” and a couple of Deadmau5 tunes. Admittedly, he doesn’t do much to the Lazy Rich mix, but the added griminess adds an element that appeals to those who might not like their tracks so polished up. The second track lends more interest, a mashup of two Deadmau5 tunes – “Cthulhu Sleeps” and “The Reward is More Cheese”. While the tune verges on noisy at moments overall the blend works well and it’s fun to hear the oh so recognizable sounds from “Reward” teased in throughout.
Calvertron vs. Qalvr – Raw 2 Da Floor (Lazy Rich Mix / Dylan Sanders Re-Rub)
Deadmau5 vs. Dylan Sanders – Cthulhu Sleeps (The Reward is More Mau5 Edit)
Mustard Pimp‘s remix of Deftones “You’ve Seen the Butcher” is more refined than previous tracks, and is a delicious slice of rolling four to the floor. Riding hats, looped vocals, flat, punctuated percussion rolls and a mess of other subtleties all alternate to keep the soundscape fat and diverse. A noisy, glassy mess of a build up is the best part here – when it all crashes in you’ll be bouncing in your seat.

JSK has decided to give away his entire discography thus far for free. Not gonna argue. Out of everything available, two stuck out to me – original track “Sirizada” done in conjunction with Ophex, and a remix of KRFTKDS’ “Put That Ass Up”. Two very different feels exist here, with “Sirizada” a turbulent mix of thumpy Latin drums and flying bleeps and the KRFTKDS mix thick with a long build trashing into unrepentant synths and stompy kicks.

LAZRtag‘s lil note that was included with this submission read “felt like it needed to be beefed up for the dance floor”. We are talking about Justice’s “Civilization” and I couldn’t agree more. This is actually my favorite remix of the tune so far, despite small mastering issues. I’d personally amp up the vocals more as well as the low end…the high end and snare dominate the mix a little more than necessary. Nitpicking aside, LAZRtag achieved what they set out to do. This remix of Justice is dance-floor ready, replete with bigger drums, bigger synths and…shattering glass? Yup.

Kid Massive and Bassjackers are giving away this remix of “A Little Louder” for free in anticipation of Kid Massive’s upcoming single dropping on June 6th. Granted, you might think this is a little prettier than what’s normally featured here on the site, but once the track enters full force with marching drum rolls and screaming synths in the background, you’ll get why it’s so addicting. Surprisingly, the dichotomy between the two personalities of the song works to its advantage, lending ebb and flow to the track.

Always awkward when you like the remix of something better than the original. Yes, We Are Bro’s “Fool” is fun, techno tinged electro, but the Just For Fun remix blows it away. Bright, affected synths that tremble and spiral down around mini breaks and genre changes are a shot straight to my heart. If you don’t fall in love with this remix, I’m banning you.
