Another week of massive submissions. I have to break it up a bit as I’m already above two dozen for tracks I want to post… The more time goes on with dsquared, the more submissions I get that are right up my alley and at a higher bitrate. Just a warning – I’m going to try and do another post this week, but then it might be a hot minute because not only do I leave to play Guatemala this weekend, some very important things will be happening with the Lolla Remix Throwdown in the next ten days or so!
Also, I have a brand new mix! I was asked to make a demo for a well-known band to tour with them in Latin America and since none of my current mixes would work, I started from scratch. Chicago was pretty abysmal that week – all clouds, rain, and no sun for days. As a result, I made a mix that I considered uplifting, and called it “Dance The Grey Away”. It features a lot of songs I love but don’t get a lot of opportunity to play, from Russ Chimes, to Gum and Midnight Conspiracy. I really hope you like it – I had fun making it.

I am a huge fan of both Risk One and Paul Johnson. Risk has always been an incredibly nice and approachable artist…and his bootlegs always destroy my dance floors. I don’t think I even need to say much of anything about Paul – I’m a Chicago girl and grew up on his tracks. In fact, the very first record I ever played at a gig was a Paul Johnson record. Here, Risk One applies his party banger mentality to “Get Get Down”, interspersing bits of the golden vocal and piano line with “I Wanna Rock”. Between the wordplay, the insanely intense kick drum and snare (I heart) and fun supplementary sounds like a bit of siren, it’s a fresh take on an old classic that’s hard not to love.

Chew Fu mania is back again. How does he have time? The past week it seemed like I got a remix from him in every other day, and they’re all great. I still do miss the days of yore (meaning um, 2008) when Chew Fu’s tracks had more grit to them – like his versions of Missy Elliot’s “Lick Shots” and Popov’s “I’m Da Man of My City”. The Chew Fu now is prettier, with synths that are still electro in nature, but smoothed out and backed with pads and whooshes. The remix of “Rouge Traders” is the exception here, and my favorite, with a melody and vocal that slightly reminds me of Princess Superstar’s “Exceeder”.

A couple remixes of Mason here by Freaky Friday and Riva Starr. They’re both completely different in sound and I’m actually a little surprised by the Riva Starr mix. Freaky Friday goes wobble with the track and the sound dominates almost completely though, save some breaks where the more organic parts like the vocal and piano line pop in. It quickly disintegrates back though with a fun pitch down on the piano before that wobble takes over again. Riva Starr goes more old school house with a dominating piano line, violin in the background and what sounds like intentionally ungainly drums and brushes. It works though, and one listen transports me back some years. Oh, and they’re making the stems available to everyone, so feel free to make your own mix as well! http://www.dj-mason.com/animalRemix.html

Okay, okay I actually LIKE the original of “OMG” and so I’ve been loving all the remixes pouring in. I think the last time I posted a Vindata remix was for the “Carry Out” remix, and it’s still my go-to for that track. This remix is just as good and utilizes the same raw and intense synths I love from Vindata. There is layering though, and at certain points, a secondary synth pops in and lends a touch of smoothness. The majority though features the singular synth and percussion that’s definitely not finessed, but it sounds great. I love that the same sounds take on a different level of refinement by Vindata interspersing those additional layers.

Another remix of “I Need A Dollar” by Pristine Blusters was featured on dsquared not too long ago, and I had to A/B the two versions several times before I decided…I liked them both equally for different reasons. While the Pristine Blusters version is more a fist-pumping party-ready tune, The Exo‘s mix is a more straightforward house-centric mix with clean drums and simple percussion. There’s a moment after the break at about 2:30 where it goes a little wild with some vocal play, but frankly, I’m not so sure it fits 100%…I’d probably do a live edit and skip. It might appeal to some of you though and overall, I do love this version.

Since waiting in line, buying drinks and paying to get past the door simply sucks, those in the club will have access to perks like free swag, drink tickets, access to members-only contests, mixes, free tracks and first stab at guest lists. Now that's music to anyone's ears.

agreed. i like Chew Fu’s old dirty stuff way better. also, the vindata usher remix is better than their carry out remix which was already pretty good. it’s def the best track in this bunch.
dani, your tracklist looks fun. i’m gonna throw on the mix right now.
LOVE the breaks in Corrected!! def reminds me of some old skool tracks we used to jam to back in the day!! shake shake shake
